I am trying to run the following command string:
find sourcedir | cpio -pdmuv destdir
The cpio command dumps core to files:
core.bsdcpio.54321
This commad sequence works OK on my other hosts.

I am able to script a work-around using two invocations of find and -exec option. The first invocation is to build directories, the second invocation is to populate files.
The cpio program still appears to be broken on the FreeBSD hosting for people.apache.org.
