Get/set the file permissions
----------------------------

                 Key: VFS-405
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VFS-405
             Project: Commons VFS
          Issue Type: Improvement
            Reporter: Damian Waszak

Add possibility to change file permissions through VFS, similar to executing *chmod* command on a file.

Gary D. Gregory commented on VFS-405:
-------------------------------------

Patch 5 applies cleanly but, when I run "mvn clean test", I get one test failure:

{noformat}
Running org.apache.commons.vfs2.provider.local.test.LocalProviderTestCase
Tests run: 79, Failures: 2, Errors: 0, Skipped: 0, Time elapsed: 4.419 sec <<< FAILURE!
{noformat}

and then the build hangs:

{noformat}
Running org.apache.commons.vfs2.provider.sftp.test.SftpProviderTestCase
{noformat}

My set up:

Apache Maven 3.0.4 (r1232337; 2012-01-17 03:44:56-0500)
Maven home: C:\Java\apache-maven-3.0.4\bin\..
Java version: 1.6.0_31, vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
Java home: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_31\jre
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: Cp1252
OS name: "windows 7", version: "6.1", arch: "amd64", family: "windows"

I notice that you moved one test case to make it more general, but that does not seem to work on Windows 7. Curious: What platform are you on?

I don't have failures for the local provider

Running org.apache.commons.vfs2.provider.local.test.LocalProviderTestCase
Tests run: 79, Failures: 0, Errors: 0, Skipped: 0, Time elapsed: 5.078 sec

It hangs for the embedded Sftp server on executing the command necessary to get the group/user id. I will see what can be done there - otherwise, it is fair to remove the tests when the server is the embedded one?

Gary D. Gregory commented on VFS-405:
-------------------------------------

We have two issues

(1) LocalProviderTestCase

This must be a difference between OSX and Windows. Who knows what happens on Linux, same as OSX I would guess.

I consider this a regression because an existing test ({{org.apache.commons.vfs2.provider.local.test.PermissionsTests}}) was removed and a new broken one ({{org.apache.commons.vfs2.test.PermissionsTests}}) was added.

I can see that the new test is not coded to test isExecutable() to account for Windows like the old one was.

Unless you can think of a better way to test isExecutable() in a platform neutral way, you probably should leave the old test be, either in place or by using the same implementation in the new class.

I would go as far as strongly suggesting that the set and get APIs be tested in separate methods. IOW, implement testIsExecutbale|R|W() and testSetExecutbale|R|W(). It's OK if the testSetExecutbale/Readable/Writable tests use the is* APIs IMO, so you can do the set/get pattern I see in the patch.

(2) Testing with an embedded server.

I've taken great pains since 2.0 to have the tests run with embedded servers whenever possible (I think WebDav is the remaining exception that's a TODO.)

I would REALLY like to keep it that way. So, no, it's not fair to avoid testing (when 'mvn test' is run)

I sometimes spend more at work writing test code than production code for a feature, this might be one of those cases.

Maybe the test set up needs to be more elaborate...

Benjamin Piwowarski commented on VFS-405:
-----------------------------------------

The patch 0001 adds basic permission support in the form of a FileProperties (more general) object that can be accessed through getFileProperties in FileObject. In the patch, there are four types of properties:
- FileProperties: the abstract base class
- AbstractPermission: the abstract base class for permission properties
- JavaPermissions: java like file permissions
- PosixPermissions: POSIX (user/group/others) permissions

The patch provides initial support for sftp and local filesystem.

The second patch is a simpler form, that adds setReadable, setWritable, setExecutable to FileObject, and support for this functionality for local and sftp file systems.

New patch 0006 choose solve (2) - I modified some SSH server related code in order to cache permissions and simulate a proper SSH server running on a machine with posix permissions (or simulating them, like openssh). It would be good though to test with an external SSH server running on windows, since the current implementation relies on running two commands to get the user and group IDs.

BTW, I had to update the mina SSHD server to version 0.7

-------------------------------------

Hi Benjamin,

Your 0002 patch is the kind of functionality I was thinking about. Thank you for that :)

Some requests though:

- Please provide unit tests for new the APIs.
- Wrong message keys. For example, the AFO.setExecutable implementation refers to the wrong message key in the FSException message. You need to create a new message and key for all the new setter APIs. See Resources.properties.
- OnCallRefreshFileObject needs the new APIs.
- DelegateFileObject needs the new APIs.
- In genenral, look for the current implementers of a similar API to find missing spots. Eclipse is quite good for that, for example look at all the implementors of FO.isExecutable.

As an example to get started, update to trunk what I just did for https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VFS-425

Gary D. Gregory commented on VFS-405:
-------------------------------------

I just see failures on the command line as reported by Maven.
For some reason, I cannot run most of the tests from Eclipse, it might be because VFS uses an elaborate JUnit 3-based custom test framework.
It might be that files are executable by default on Windows and not on the Mac are vice-versa, or the same kind of issue with readable/writable.

The SFTP tests use an embedded Apache SSHD server:

Apache SSHD is a 100% pure java library to support the SSH protocols on both the client and server side.
This library is based on Apache MINA, a scalable and high performance asynchronous IO library.

I just updated this library to the latest version and the problem is the same.

What happens when you run "mvn clean test"?

Running OS X, and testing with an sftp server running linux. What are the failures on Windows 7?

I am not sure what should be the behavior for an SSH server running on Windows though, since the Sftp implementation relies on running the command "id" that gives the user and group ids.

Note: for FileSystemManager, there is a special character above the line "Locates a file by name" - this was cleaned up by my editor and this what caused the problem with the patch (probably).

> Add possibility to change file permissions through VFS, similar to executing *chmod* command on a file.
> Simple use case scenario would be to move a file to SFTP server, and then retrieve and change the permissions, e.g. exececute chmod 0644.

It should be in SVN diff format. Which patch command do you use so I can see what's wrong?

I tried to apply a solution found on the Web
http://www.mail-archive.com/dev@trafficserver.apache.org/msg00864.html
Is it better with patch 0004?

Also note that trunk already had the pom.xml change for Apache SSHd.

[jira] [Updated] (VFS-405) Get/set the file permissions

Benjamin Piwowarski updated VFS-405:
------------------------------------

    Attachment: permissions-0006.patch

New patch choose solve (2) - I modified some SSH server related code in order to cache permissions and simulate a proper SSH server running on a machine with posix permissions (or simulating them, like openssh). It would be good though to test with an external SSH server running on windows, since the current implementation relies on running two commands to get the user and group IDs.
