I think the solution is to change the getAsciiStream to a getBinaryStream.  

But I can't tell for sure.   I'm having problems testing this issue.  I made a test for hsqldb, where it stored a template in Unicode, but it passed even with the old code.  

Any comments on this?  I might just change it without a breaking test.
