This bug no longer reproduces on the current `master` branch (`4.0.0-beta-5-SNAPSHOT`). The code has been significantly refactored — the old `pathElements` field (and `getPathElements()`) no longer exists. Dependency handling is now done through `ToolExecutor`/`ToolExecutorForTest` with a `dependencies` map, which is always properly initialized.
Tested with the attached POC: both `compile` and `testCompile` phases execute without NPE.
