Turbine Book

Is there any book in preparation for Turbine? I think
there is definetely a market for it. I know I'm part
of it, and even if I'm the only one I'm a very big
person :-)

Anyway, even a quick start with detailed information
on what to do in steps explaining the different
services and all would be great.

Just throwing ideas around...

Adrian

Well, Scott is working on setting up a documentation Wiki. The talk was to
develop of complete User's Guide. Once the documentation is complete, we
could relatively easily pull the wiki content and convert it into one of the
markup languages used for computer books. It seems easy enough to get a
computer book published nowadays given the size of the market, and perhaps
the proceeds could go towards a Turbine-Dev conference or to Apache-Jakarta
(I am completely ignorant of how the ASF handles monetary donations).

While most everything one needs to learn turbine is available online at the
website/archives, I feel there is something irreplaceable to a physical book
that you can take someplace away from a computer to read.

That's a pretty interesting idea. I would love to see a book on Turbine.

My sense is that the software hasn't stabilized enough to support a
book. Considering that Turbine 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, and Plexus/Summit all get
bandwidth on the mailing lists, which version could a publisher target
with hands-on information?

Re: Turbine Book (IBM Developer Works)

Posted by Adrian Madrid <ae...@yahoo.com>.
Thanks for all your comments. While mulling on this I
came up with an idea to get more publicity and
documentation at the same time. Why don't we ask the
Developer Works (IBM) site to do articles/tutorials on
the subject?

They have a form to submit ideas for new content
(http://www-105.ibm.com/developerworks/newcontent.nsf/myidea)
and if we can get enough requests I bet they will
start thinking seriously about it. I'm light years
away of being able to write something but I can ask
politely for it. And I believe dW have a great user
base that will greatly benefit from the framework and
maybe the only roadblock is knowing more about it.

What do you think? Should we start a rally for Turbine
content on dW? I already did...

My .02 cents,

Adrian

I agree this is needed - I am seeing job ads for Apache Struts people in
the UK, but have never seen one for Turbine.
It is possible that the three or hour existing Struts books help make it
more popular - even if it is a worse technical solution than Turbine.

I am currently reviewing the O'Reilly Struts book, and have just heard that
Manning are publishing one too.

Technically I feel more comfortable with Turbine, but we need to do a lot
more publicity to tell people that you *don't* have to toe the Sun party line.

AW: Turbine Book [to be released]

Posted by Marc Lustig <ma...@marclustig.com>.
It is true that the lack of a clear direction is a severe problem with
Turbine. However I think a book would be great that explains the various
components and architectural ideas behind Turbine and how to build an app
from that so that it fits the individual requirements.
There is a book in German scheduled to be released in december called
"Portale und Web-Applikationen mit Apache Frameworks".
It covers the following [Excerpt from the editor]:

(MVC)-Paradigmas verstandlich erlautert. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt stellt
die Entwicklung von Enterprise-Portalen dar - hier werden die wichtigsten
Grundbegriffe moderner Portal- Konzepte dargestellt.

Cheers,
Marc
