Can you believe it?

Microsoft previously claimed they invented symlinks and disk mount
points.

Now they claim they invented XML.

What would they claim next? the invention of C?

I wonder why they are alwasy in legal troubles :)

ROFL! I think that nice Mr Berners-Lee, and maybe that James
Clark fellow might have something quite comical to say on the
matter.

It does make me laugh. in my opinion, Microsoft ignored the
internet for years, and now they claim to have invented
most of its underlying infrastructure.

I wonder if Microsoft secretly invented DARPA. <g>

I don't even know where to begin here. It could be a long thread! :)

The point here is that no other company in the world, including
Microsoft, has done more to *crush* Java than SUN. There were some very
smart people initially involved with Java. Then the laywers and
marketing guys got involved and screwed things up.

The point is that with the lawsuit against MS SUN has basically said
that they don't want anyone to innovate in the Java space. This has not
been a good thing for Java.

The point is that if SUN were to pick a good license, maybe require the
code to be republished, then MS would have had to release the code and
then their embrace and extend philosophy wouldn't have worked.

Open Source wouldn't change this fact. If SUN has an Open Source JVM and
someone broke the license they would have the right and will to sue.

If you don't believe in Java and Open Source, why are you here? Yes.
Open Source doesn't win by creating specifications, we win by making
implementations. The JCP 2.0 goes a logn way to making an Open
Specification process. No SUN just needs to OSS Java with a decent
license and we will have the best of both worlds.

I want Sun to open the source to their JVM and turn control of the JVM and
core API specifications over to a standards body for further development.
Open source isn't just a method to improve code, it's a method to ensure
that I'm not tacking myself onto a potentially sinking ship. Open
standards are a way of ensuring interoperability.

-1 on that.

Sun has the desire and $$$ to protect Java in the court rooms when
attempts are made to crush its promise. Which OpenSource project has
ever gone to court over licenses, how about Sun, and how many times has
MS (and others) ignored licenses, to crush opponents?
Those questions should be asked before requesting Java to become
OpenSource. After all, Open Source is a method to improve code, and you
are free to do so, and your work could be for the gain of all others.

Yeah... but SUN is hardly any different than Microsoft anyway :)

(off topic) What would you want to see in a pure java ISP?

Posted by Brian <gi...@dipswitch.penguinpowered.com>.
Hello out there in Java land!

I am putting together a business plan to start a pure java
ISP. My plan thus far will have separate dev/production environments for
my customers to test their servlets on. I was thinking of starting out
with alpha boxes running the latest Compaq JVM and TowerJ jvm. That way
you have a standard and accelerated jvm to work on.

I will "sandbox" the jvm's so that processes from different
customers will not interfere with each other, and provide an RMI/API set
for jvm's to "talk" to each other. The production environment will not be
distributed in nature in the beginning however, I plan to add Load Sharing
Facilities and load balancing over time.

Dev boxes will have the standard Linux tools for java. I plan on
making these boxes as open as possible for you to develop your java
solutions under. Production will be a little bit more stringent in terms
of processes and system resources.

I understnad that this sounds vague right now but, I just put the
numbers together and got the capital to start. Please send your
comments/suggestons so that I may hone this plan into a more focussed and
developer aware ISP! Thanks!!

I'm excited to hear your feedback!

I don't think that Microsoft really said this... probably just a bad
author who didn't do his research >|

Still funny though :)
