You might find helpful settings for your RP here:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/en/mod/mod_proxy.html#envsettings.
But it is really strange to me that this happened after you upgraded your IWS to
2.2.4. As there had been many changes between 2.0.x and 2.2.x in the proxy
backend connection handling I would have expected that there might be problems
after upgrading the RP to 2.2.4, but not after upgrading the IWS.
