mathematical symbols in fo with fop
Hello all,
I'm trying to display mathematical symbols (more specifically the square
root symbol) in a pdf document, and a very basic version of the source
fo document looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<fo:root xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format">
<fo:layout-master-set>
<fo:simple-page-master master-name="my-page">
<fo:region-body margin="1in"/>
</fo:simple-page-master>
</fo:layout-master-set>
<fo:page-sequence master-reference="my-page">
<fo:flow flow-name="xsl-region-body">
<fo:block>Hello, world! --√--</fo:block>
</fo:flow>
</fo:page-sequence>
</fo:root>
However, when I process this file with FOP, the pdf has the following
content:
Hello, world! --#--
I'm using FOP 0.20.4 on Windows XP. I've been looking through the Times
New Roman font on XP with the Windows character map utility, and I can
see the square root symbol in there. What am I doing wrong? Is this
simply not supported? I tried XEP also, and that processor didn't
display anything at all - this leads me to believe that the mistake is
on my part somewhere :) Thanks for all hints!
cheers,
roel

This means the current font does not have a glyph for the
√ character. Find a font which has a glyph and make
it known to FOP as described in docs/html-docs/fonts.html,
and you're set.
