   Going to assess latest performance with @alamb next week (see updated in PR description), and then discuss about whether we are converting this to a PR (perhaps breaking up smaller too).
   
   Have 1 test failing for the 1k memory spillable sort (`test_sort_1k_mem`). Will dig into that next week.
