1.5.3 up for signing/testing

I'm pleased to announce that Subversion 1.5.3 is up for testing and signing.
The magic revision is r33570. You can find the tarball here:

http://orac.ece.utexas.edu/pub/svn/1.5.3/

(I'm also pleased to have access to orac again, and thank the University, who,
unbeknownst to them, generously donate the bandwidth for our release tarball
distribution.)

You know the drill: signatures from full committers back to me, and enthusiastic
tester feedback is welcome. At this point, this candidate is not yet blessed
for wide release, so please don't make it available to people not interested in
test-driving the new release.

Distro package maintainers, please do NOT include any pre-release builds, even
blessed, into operating system distros. The reasons for not doing so were very
eloquently outlined by Karl in a mail, which is summarized at the above address.

The quick version is: we don't guarantee compatibility between the pre-releases
and the final release, so if people install the release candidate, all their
repositories and working copies might break unrepairably when they upgrade to
1.5.3 proper. We don't want that kind of bad publicity, and neither do you.

-Hyrum

Summary:

  +1 to release (Unix).

Paranoia:

Verified that all 6 distribution packages match their md5sums,
  sha1sums and "to-tigris" copies.

Verified that *.bz2 vs *.gz uncompress to exactly the same tarball,
  for both deps and non-deps.

Environment:

  OS/Platform:
    SuSE SLED10SP2 2.6.16.60-0.29-smp i686 GNU/Linux

Using in-tree build of subversion-deps-1.5.2 packages:
    neon

  Using SuSE distribution-supplied packages:
    libapr1-1.2.2-13.2
    libapr-util1-1.2.2-13.2
    db-4.3.29-15.2
    openssl-0.9.8a-18.26
    perl-5.8.8-14.10
    python-2.4.2-18.22
    zlib-1.2.3-15.2

Tested:

  [ bdb | fsfs ] x [ ra_local | ra_svn ]
  swig-pl
  swig-py

Results:

make check ... (4 ways): No failures.
make check-swig-pl: "All tests successful, 7 subtests skipped."
  make check-swig-py: "Ran 105 tests [...] OK".

Paranoia:

 Verified md5sum.

Tests were run from branch checkout. So I extracted the tarball and
svn exported the branch and diffed them. Differences were expected.

I built and tested the .zip file on Windows XP with VC2005 Express,
Apache 2.2.6, neon 0.27.2, BDB 4.4.20, zlib 1.2.3, and OpenSSL
0.9.8g.

All 6 test combos passed. I also built the perl, python, and javahl
bindings but did not test them. I did not use or test the
dependencies file.

Possibly yes. Though on the issue-3067 I see it much more (as in a
dozen tests fail). Running trunk with ra_serf right now to see if it
occurs there.

Isn't this the same sporadic Serf error you have been banging your
head over in your issue-3067 branch?

I compared the checksums with the list provided by Hyrum. Compared the tar
files after gunzip/bzip2 and compared the contents of the archives with the
1.5.3 tag. Except for some keyword expansions (GMT vs CEST) and the
distribution only files the packages are identical.

+0 for release, based on building my usual Debian packages without
problems. This is not a +1 with sigs, because I patch the sources, and
I did not do the appropriate N-way testing.

- Moderately patched source, same patches I used in 1.5.1 for Debian
(minus r31546, which is already in 1.5.3)
- Debian lenny (will "soon" be 5.0) featuring:
    apr 1.2.12
    apr-util 1.2.12
    bdb 4.6.21
    neon 0.28.2
    serf 0.2.0
    cyrus-sasl 2.1.22
- Built on both amd64 and i386
- Main testsuite passed, fsfs x ra_local
- Bindings testsuites passed:
    swig-pl with perl 5.10.0
    swig-py with python 2.5.2
    swig-py with python 2.4.5
    swig-rb with ruby 1.8.7.72
- Testsuite failed:
javahl with curious mix of ecj 3.3.0, gcj 4.3.2
    - but NOT a regression - this _always_ fails the same two tests
