How to see a variable filled in a template outside the template?

Hello,
can somebody help me ?
I have the problem, that I want to fill a variable in a template-Block,
but
I must read this variable outside the template. With older versions of
xalan
there was no problem with variables. Now I use xalan_0_20_0 and I have
no
idea how to solve this problem. I understood how to pass parameters to 
templates, but I need to know  how to pass parameters out from
templates?
I tried it with "global defined" variables, but when I tried to fill the
variable inside the template, this value is not known outside.
 
If this is very stupid question, I beg your pardon!
