Example of pre and post valve processing?

Can someone provide or point me to a source example demonstrating the use
of pre and post servlet valve processing using Tomcat 4.x?

Something that uses the org.apache.catalina.startup.Embedded class' main
would be especially helpful, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
