Bert, if you think we need a big catch-up merge before rolling the 1.9
beta, I suggest you say so here, on dev@. IRC and commit logs have a
tendency to get lost in the cracks.
FWIW, I don't see any reason not do do such a merge.

Surely it's better to release with known issues than with unknown
issues, yet we've been doing the latter for years. :)
