Update and Status in large working copy causes Windows to hang

I am running Windows XP SP3 with Subversion and TortoiseSVN 1.6.6 and have 2
GB of RAM with nothing else running during the operations. The problem
below has also been seen in 1.6.3 and I've heard reports from users I
support that they've seen this in 1.5.x.

For sufficiently large working copies (1.2 GB, not sure what the cut off is
though) when performing update or status operations from the top level of
the working copy, Windows Explorer locks up and stops refreshing windows or
responding at all. This usually leads to errors in the actual Subversion
operation, saying there aren't enough resources to complete the operation.
Sometimes my VPN client disconnects part way through. For these large
working copies I can usually reproduce the error with one or two updates in
a row.

Sometimes I can clear it up by killing Windows Explorer and letting it
automatically reload.

Has anyone else seen issues like this? Is this a memory leak?

Thanks.
Justin

I started here because I was seeing the problem even when using the
command-line client exclusively, without even navigating the working copy in
Windows Explorer.

Since changing the Status cache preference in TortoiseSVN fixed the problem,
I completely agree. :-)

Thanks.

Subversion itself has nothing to do with Windows Explorer.
TortoiseSVN, being a windows shell extension, of course does, so I
think you should talk to the developers of TortoiseSVN about this on
their mailing list.

I'd still like to see you run these tests on WCs checked out from the
same place on a system that doesn't have that antivirus software
installed. You haven't conclusively ruled that software out yet.
Thousands of people are using Subversion on Windows without these
errors, so there must be something different in your environment.

Hadn't tried until now.

I downloaded the most recent (1.6.13 at the time) command line client from Collabnet, tested it, same problem: insufficient resources.

We did some more tests, ran the update while running procmon, didn't fail. (WTF?!)

After running procmon, the issue didn't reappear on the machine we ran the tests on.

We're now investigating what running procmon changed on the machine. (Nothing was installed, just the exe from sysinternals was run)

Have you tried to reproduce the issue with command line clients provided
by other vendors? See http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html#windows

Please also try with version 1.6.13, if possible.

The disks are in all cases local hard drives, no sharing.

Both machines are 64 Bit machines, running XP 32 Bit

The working copy is about 2.0 GB (according to Windows taking up 2.54 GB on disk), 158515 files, 33471 folders (excluding .svn folders).

I know this is large, but since it's working on one machine and not the other, it's still puzzling.

Some quick questions from the hip:
- What kind of disks are the working copies located on for machine A
and B? Locally or remotely?
- For A and B: are they 32-bit or 64-bit?
- How big is the working copy we're talking about? Can you give an

In my case, disabling OfficeScan didn't help. I have the funny issue that two machines that are nearly identical except for the processor behave differently.

Machine A: Intel Core2 Quad, 4 GB memory, running XP SP3: works.

Machine B: Intel i7, 4 GB memory, running XP SP3: gets the issue with insufficient system resources.

Findings we had:

TortoiseSVN works on both machines. (1.6.8, svn libs 1.6.11)

Command line svn client creates the issue on machine B, not on machine A. Version of the command line client: 1.6.12, was also tested with 1.6.1

Disabling hyperthreading on machine B has no effect.

Disabling TurboBoost on machine B has no effect.

It’s not a memory problem – the machine did not run out of memory, according to the windows performance counters.

Running vmware player on machine A, svn update crashes on the host, works on the guest.

Windows doesn’t quite hang, when the screen locks, you can still try to log on as Administrator, which logs off the subversion user and causes the machine to recover.

I’m running out of ideas what else to try to get it running.

Versions:

    APR 1.3.9

    APR-util 1.3.9

    APR-ICONV 1.2.1

    Neon 0.28.6

    Berkeley DB 4.4.20

    OpenSSL 0.9.8o

    ZLib 1.2.3

    Apache 2.2.15

    Python 2.6

    libintl 0.14.1 (patched)

    Ruby 1.8.6

    Cyrus SASL 2.1.22

    serf 0.3.0

    sqlite 3.6.22

The compiled command line binary was downloaded from http://alagazam.net/

Cheers,

Ulli

I was still planning on trying to get Symantec AV disabled for testing
purposes. Just posting my progress. :-)

I'll post again with my results of that test, assuming I can convince

After testing further I have confirmed that this problem occurs even when I
completely uninstall TortoiseSVN.

First I updated one large working copy. Then I updated a second large
working copy. This second update failed with the following error.

svn: Can't check path 'some\dir\in\workingcopy\.svn\lock': Insufficient
system resources exist to complete the requested service.

Around the same time, the title bars in Windows Explorer windows stop
refreshing and get garbled looking as I drag them around.

When I tried to run "svn cleanup" I got a similar error.

svn: Can't open file 'some\dir\.svn\lock': Insufficient system resources
exist to complete the requested service.

After waiting a couple minutes I tried the cleanup again and it succeeded.
After closing the messed up Windows Explorer windows, if I open new Windows
Explorer windows they refresh correctly.

Is it possible this has to do with inefficient use of memory in Subversion,
so that certain memory runs low and Windows stops behaving properly?

Thanks,
Justin

So what you're saying is that policy is impeding you from doing your
job. Policy isn't supposed to get in the way, it's supposed to make
sure everything's done right without putting up unnecessary
roadblocks.

At the very least, you need to test it somehow to prove this theory.
If you can document that the current configuration is in fact impeding
your work, you'll have a lot more chance of making the change happen.
Can you get a system that's nearly identical to yours, but without AV,
to test on?

There's no chance that will happen where I work. I've tried to have that
conversation, but it went nowhere.

Can you try disabling it? At the very least, tell it to ignore the
.svn directories. I seem to recall that being one of the troublesome
AVs.

I saw the problem on SP2 as well.

The problem happened with svn.exe, if TortoiseSVN's Status cache preference
was set to Shell.

I have Symantec Antivirus 10.1.7.7000 installed.

I have a couple WCs in that size range (including the .svn
directories) and haven't seen this with 1.6.x versions of SVN & TSVN.

I'm running XP SP2, not SP3, I don't know if that might be the
difference. Laptop, 2GB RAM, 7200 RPM drive, lots of other stuff
running.

What antivirus are you using? They often treat command-line programs
(svn.exe) differently from GUI apps (TSVN and its related utilities),
which could be part of the issue.

Re: Update and Status in large working copy causes Windows to hang

There are no svn:externals in these working copies.

I had Status cache set to Shell. Now I changed it to None. So far I
haven't had the problem after making this change. I'll keep testing though
to make sure.

Are you referencing a large number of svn:external properties in
your working copy? I recently submitted a patch to address
an issue where TCP connections were not cleaned up until process
exit. This problem caused similar "lockup" behavior under
Windows. This patch did not make it into 1.6.6.

You may want to try and disable the TortoiseSVN icon cache process as
well,
since it can bog things down on large working copies. (I don't
consider 1.2G all that large though.)
