Since the 2.5.1 release is still ongoing, the PR for the 2.5 branch (https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/8854) is blocked.

Since the 2.4 branch is unblocked and we want to get this feature into the next 2.4.x release, I created a different PR targeting the 2.4 branch (https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/9106).
