having trouble merging data into Base

Greetings!

I’m trying to import about 500 contacts into a base database I’ve designed. I can’t seem to figure this out and everything I’m trying that was suggested online isn’t working. Including cutting and pasting. All headers are consistent and the data to merge into base is already in the OpenOffice  Spreadsheet format.
I’m working on a Mac

I will also be needing to do mail merges 

—so frustrated please help!
