Antonio, it's not a concern right now, but it was and maybe it will be
again. As I explained to you re Xalan, ok?!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your comments.

Basically, this document is not related to this commit. The document
describes how to setup "endorsed libs" in a working environment. There
is no such "Lenya endorsed dir" requirement at all.

Keep in mind the same apply for forrest, lenya or any other cocoon-based
application. It is a cocoon concern. This is not a lenya "special"
concern as some people wrongly pointed out in previous mails on this thread.

Don't worry, the discussed changes does not remove this capability at all.

We have no plans to drop java 1.4.x support at all. Sorry if you read
this between lines. It was not the intention at all. At the same time we
should support java 1.5. The java 1.5 is like the egg-chicken problem
and somehow we need to start.

Best Regards,

Antonio Gallardo.

Forgive me if I am not following the whole thread here, but
http://lenya.apache.org/1_4/installation/source_version.html says that
Lenya *does* require several files to be in the Lenya endorsed dir in
order to run under Tomcat (and WebLogic). Maybe that requirement no
longer applies to Lenya 1.4, but I endured many days' frustration
trying to get this right for my Lenya 1.2.4 site a few months ago.
Please don't remove this capability unless someone has first tested on
a wide combination of Lenya versions and app servers (especially
WebLogic and Oracle app server). And remember that many organizations
don't use Java 1.5 yet for a variety of compelling reasons.

I am just trying to understand how you want to solve the problem re
additional endorsed libraries.

well, I told you: I don't think it made sense to remove this dir and
remove it from the build process, but rather to add a README.txt
and explain why this dir is useful. Can I be any more direct?
> I will be glad to help. And if yes, please explain the things directly
> instead of wasting resources in a nonsense discussion.

I could argue that you waste resources by not asking, but rather just
deleting stuff which you don't know what they are good for
and other people having to put them back in when they will be used.

So, who is really wasting resources?

People are using Lenya in production at many places and there are a lot
of good reasons for many things that these things are
within Lenya. I am happy to explain what they are good for in case you
or anyone else doesn't know. And I will also ask beforehand
if I don't something.

To the final build. What is the point of digging and digging the same
thing all the time? Are you testing my patience or what? Sorry but I see
this discussion as pointless. You should be more direct and explain if
your build went broken. I will be glad to help. And if yes, please

Nobody is changing nor touching the cocoon external dir. We are just
taking (copying) from there some jar needed for lenya at runtime.

copying to where exactly?

I guess Felix means it's bad to change the external Cocoon and I very
much agree, because it will
to problems re upgrading. The external Cocoon is just to make things
easier re installement and development
and nothing more.

Could you explain what the problem is re the geronimo and the
mail/activation jars with Cocoon? I didn't find an open issue
in the bug database.

I agree that it would be much more preferable to copy the jars to
a lib/local directory in Lenya. Still, it should be avoided to touch the
external Cocoon sources.

I don't think it is a good idea to place mail.jar into the endorsed lib.

This is a know cocoon 2.1.x bug. What we may do is to remove some
geronimo jars and copy our jars in our lib/local directory into the
final build.

wdyt?

Actually, I'm speaking about libs that get -Djava.endorsed.dirs=...,
not local ones. I took mail.jar and activation.jar as an example as
it seems that mail notification does not work in Cocoon with Tomcat
5.5.17 if these two libraries are not endorsed.

Remember, "endorsed" has a special meaning in java. Such directory as
you are described above should be called local. And I agree to add such
directory for lenya.

There might be a need to place certain libs into the endorsed dir for an
application based on the Lenya framework. 'mail.jar' or 'activation.jar'
comes to my mind, there might be other libraries. It would be handy
if there is such a directory for endorsed libs in Lenya to avoid having
to touch the external Cocoon sources.

So, +1 for keeping the endorsed lib dir within Lenya.

Felix

it used to be there because it was needed some time ago IIRC

No offense, but Antonio, are you actually reading what I am writing? I
wrote the this many times now and you keep asking basically the same
question.

Just leave it as it is and in case we will need an endorsed library
again I will put it back.

I was unable to find it in the code base. Would you kindly point out
where is this special xalan version needed by lenya?

Have lenya special needs for endorsed libs? I am just asking, because it
works for me. But I use java 1.5.

I think you misunderstand. It's not about the endorsed libs within
Cocoon, but about endorsed libs which
are needed especially by Lenya.

I understand. We have to options:

1. Copy cocoon endorsed to lenya endorsed and do maintenance work here
2. Use cocoon endorsed libs directly.

I will prefer 2 while we don't have an issue with the endorsed libs.

we cannot force Cocoon to put in libraries which Lenya needs (unless
they are of very general nature) and as said
the external Cocoon branch is not a vendor branch.

no that doesn't make sense. external cocoon_2_1_x should not be touched
at all, because
it is not considered a vendor branch, but just to make sure we are all
on the same version and
simplify things.

Antonio might want to say why he changed this, because I don't see any
reason why not to leave it

Since this remove I get:
BUILD FAILED
/home/thorsten/src/apache/lenya/trunk/src/targets/webapp-build.xml:120: /home/thorsten/src/apache/lenya/trunk/lib/endorsed not found.

As soon I mkdir lib/endorsed it is working again.

That means we now have to place all endorsed libs not anymore in
$LENYA_LIB/endorsed but
${LENYA_HOME}/externals/cocoon_2_1_x/lib/endorsed

I am not sure.

On Windows XP it looks like that:

D:\workspace\lenya_1.4.x>ant osTest
Buildfile: build.xml

osTest:
      [echo] Windows XP

BUILD SUCCESSFUL
Total time: 1 second

I'm not sure how it looks on other Windozes, maybe

Windows NT
Windows 98
...

Then we could check just the occuring of Windows...

The best is to turn on java 1.5 support for windows too. Initially, I
thought to add a ${os.name} check into the ant build for windows.
Unfortunately, I don't know what this variable returns for windows. Can
someone kindly provide it?

well, companies using Lenya might not switch to 1.5 so quickly, so I
think it's very important that Lenya runs also with Lenya 1.4 for
quite some time.
>

it seems to me there is no check on the operating system within the
Lenya build process, right?

I am bit confused because you write that it's turned on now for Linux,
but since it doesn't check on the OS I guess
it's also turned on for Windows. Has anyone checked that?

Thanks

Java 1.4.x is slowly begin deprecated. It's time to switch now.

BTW, would some win user setup the config for 1.5 in lenya *.bat files?
