URL exhibiting problem: http://www-isl.stanford.edu/people (see above)

Symptoms:

If I place the .htaccess file shown below into
the URL below, all hell breaks loose on our
server. The URL that is actually fetched, and
the one that ends up on the "URL" line _after_
the load is attempted, is random garbage (sometimes
composed of pieces of previous attempts).

Apparently, these .htaccess-based Redirect commands
(or, for that manner, _any_ Redirects; I don't use them
otherwise) causes just about every URL to be 
randomly redirected.
