https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124068
Bug ID: 124068
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Bar chart - axes are reversed
Product: Calc
Version: 4.1.0-dev
Hardware: PC
OS: Linux64
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: code
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org

example spreadsheet
This is related to TestLink AOOTest-733.
According help: "The y axis shows categories. The x axis shows the value for

The sample document shows an absolutely correct bar chart (due to AOO
terminology) , Help also is correct.
Bar chart is more or less an alternative form of the column chart with
alternated function of x-axis and y-axis.
Seems to me some misunderstanding.

I took a look. It's not a plain rotation, but a mirroring on the diagonal (0,0)
to (1,1). This explains why the coordinate system orientation 'seems' to
change.

I never watched the Status bar, indeed that what most users will call the
Y-axis (vertical) is shown as X-axis and vice versa. I am pretty sure that that
is intended and correct, some reasoning tomorrow.

Demo
I am not 100% sure whether there is a universal definition. I checked
"Bronstein Handbook of Mathematics" and "Bartsch Handbook of Mathematics".
Both tell:
(a) There are lots of different definitions of coordinate systems like
Cartesian coordinate system, polar coordinates, cylinder coordinates,
orthogonal or oblique-angled, ...
(b) Cartesian coordinate system are known
right-hand system (reporter's base for report, most common)
left-hand system, Easting and northing and others
(b1) So the Column Chart is a right-handed , Bar Chart is a left-handed
coordinate system
(c) Most common use of such coordinate systems for charts is something like
y=f(x), where x is some kind of control variable or count variable, and
y is a value calculated from x by a function
(d) These considerations (elaborated version of Comment 6) show that
AOO works correct here, also in Bar Chart the x-axis shows the
control variable and the y-axis the calculated values

Try the following:
Change the format of the x-axis, e. g. increase the line width.
Format → Chart Type…
Change the Type from Bar to Column.
Hope this will help to understand that is it not a bug.

Maybe the description for "Bar" can be changed to only:
"This type is like the type Column but the axis are swapped."

As a Bar chart is only a rotated Column chart AOO works correct. But you are
right that the help should be updated with a right description.

screenshot of spreadsheet
selection of x-axis in formatting toolbar highlights the vertical categories
axis which is y-axis, not x-axis.

The demo document from comment above shows that the Bar Chart is a left-handed
variant of the right-handed Column-Chart, everything is correct.

--- Comment #9 from Edwin Sharp <el...@apache.org> ---
We are talking about a two dimensional coordinate system.
Right hand attribute is meaningful in three dimensional coordinate system.
According right hand rule when your fingers are in the x axis direction and you
fold them towards the y axis, your thumb will show the positive direction of
the z axis.
AOO help says "The y axis shows categories. The x axis shows the value for each
category." and this is a wrong statement when one observes attachment 82886 !
