[scm] separating JDK specific code

I'm begining to think playing with 1.4 while using 1.5 for some things
is going to get really nasty. Perhaps we need to separate the JDK 1.5
stuff so people are not building 1.5 jars and deploying them to the
repo. If 1.5 jars are deployed they should be totally different
artifacts. Either this or 1.5 dependent optional features need to be
made dynamically loadable.

For example MINA might have the ssl filter separated out into another
MINA project which would mean MINA would have to go multiproject.
Perhaps this is not the answer either. Hmmm anyone got ideas here?

Sorry again for this off-topic mail...

Nothing to do with Ldap, it's just ASN.1 connected stuff.

cheers,

Vacations

Hi guys,

as I'm starting to do weird things like posting off-topic mails on the
list (Web Services stuff), that's a sign I need some rest (nothing to do
with Web Services).

I will be unreachable for two weeks, trying to refuel my energy cells.

No internet, no mail, no computer. Just sea, sex and fun (no Sun, I
said).

cheers,
Emmanuel Lécharny

You rock. Sounds like we're going to start ramping up another project.

Thanks for the doc I'll have a look at it soon.

For about 8 months I've been coding ScheduleWorld exclusively in Java 5
and using retroweaver to support 1.4 clients. It's just part of my build
process and I don't have to think about it. As someone else mentioned,
you just need to make sure you don't use libraries/methods exclusive to
1.5 rt.jar.

Cheers.

If you isolate the 1.5 code to a Jar you can use a custom class loader
to load it dynamically and allow it to be included with the release.
And it could be enabled if the 1.5 environment is detected.

You can either do the class loading yourself or maybe use the Spring
Framework to handle the IoC. I suppose the SSL in 1.5 support could
be loadable like a JDBC driver. I could try prototyping that sort of
feature. I know enough about class loading to be dangerous and post
the code to make it work.

All 1.5 specific code should be in its own branch. Absolutely.

1.4 code can work in a 1.5 environment, but not vice-versa.

Re: [scm] separating JDK specific code

The only issue would be when the code references a 1.5 specific
namespace and class. In this case we can make the build script a
little smarter. I remember in the Jakarta DBCP build script it would
comment out lines of code depending on the version of the JDK
compiling the code. It was automatic.

In the case of the DBCP it was commenting out added interface methods
which were added to 1.4. That was the section of code which was
commented out.

Perhaps we can simply do the same.

Strong +1 to moving the Java 5 only SSL filters to a separate JAR.

Trustin - the problem with using Java 5 with those settings is that you
won't get any errors if you use classes in the JDK 5 rt.jar that aren't
in 1.4, as is the case here. Maven does have an option to commpile with
a whole other JDK if that'll help.

PS Alex - you might want to update your address book - your new mails
still go to incubator and slip through my updated filter :)

Cheers,
Brett

We can use Java 5 to build 1.4 JARs. Please add this to project.properties:

maven.compile.source = 1.4
maven.compile.target = 1.4

I use JDK 1.5 tu build MINA, and maven generates 1.4 JARs for me.

I can't see any problem here. Am I missing something?
