This is an OS bug (Solaris getaddrinfo() failing to represent 255.255.255.255
depending on how the resolver is configured).  It may be fixed in a later
Solaris patch level.

There are at least a couple of work-arounds, which you have indicated.

Hopefully this information will be useful to others that may hit the problem.
