How is the hex code generated for the kid language ? Do we have a special
tool for it ?
I can see the that the kid language it not completely "translated".
If we do not have a tool I could easily add it to genLang (a simple "if"),
that when writing source files, it should add a number in the kid language,
which are autoincremented. This is of course assumed that there are no
logic in the hex number.

This looks like an enhanced (or old) kid build.

This thread discusses the kid/help id thing. You can use the help ID in
the current version you are using to locate a PO file.
This does not solve the problem of locating in the user interface the
string you are currently translating.

The UI to PO correlation (for example: given a menu item, or a button in
a control, find the PO file where it should be translated) can be solved

Unfortunately, the PO to UI correlation (given a string in a PO file,
find the element in the UI that is being translated) is not that "easy".

None, AFAIK; everything I can imagine involves something "geek" (that
is, certain level of knowledge of the source code); developers have
a tool called opengrok, for example, that might help for your case, but
might be complicated for a translator.

(Tools - Options... - OOo - General - Help - Tips - Extended Tips), and
set this environment variable (on Linux, add it to your ~/.bashrc or
export it in the same terminal, before executing AOO - from this very
same terminal; on Windows, execute cmd.exe, set the variable on the
command prompt, set HELP_DEBUG=1, and execute AOO within that command
prompt - using the full path to soffice.exe).

Nothing you can't do with PO files without kid, but knowing the HelpID
as displayed on the help tooltip, no need for a special build (IIRC Help
IDs for UNO commands, those that the tooltip shows as .uno:Xxx, can be
found in the Po files as .uno_Xxx). Not to mention that from
a developer's perspective, git grepping or opengroking the HelpID is
more useful.

thx for the answer, I will try it later tonight but you have convinced (and
I have saved some hours work). I will not implement kid in genLang (should
someone else feel strongly about they can always do it later).

Thanks Ariel, could you add the options and tips (like export
HELP_DEBUG=1) for configuring the HelpID builds and the KeyID builds to
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/KeyID_Build ? Or just share detailed
instructions about the build environment and configure switches here,
and then I will take care of copying them there.

Looking at the link, Arusha, a section in TZ and also a people who speak maasai but who use Kiswahili makes me think you might be referring to the kiswahili version of OpenOffice.org.
As much as I could, I worked with the team making what turned out to be Jambo OpenOffice. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jambo_OpenOffice>.
Unfortunately, as the Wikipedia entry indicates…...
It'd be nice if the Kiswahili version of AOO were resumed. The primary driver of it left the project and moved back to Sweden, and then sort of became incommunicado, though I tried contacting him late last year, as I wanted this particular effort to resume, too. I used to know some of the principals behind it, but that was back in 2004, ages ago. And as was more often the case then, projects more quickly withered on the vine than bore fruit.
That is not to say that there wouldn't be a lot of interest in this resuming; of that, I have no doubt. Macroeconomic issues, such as the recent elections in Kenya, a well as recent (>2 years) accelerations in ICT would likely drive attention to such an effort.
What sort of resources could you marshal? At a guess I can think that there would be quite a few here who would find such a localization effort of interest.

I have stumbled upon this rather old initiative called a 'built' version
of OpenOffice 1.1.3 (Arusha)

Correlating Lithuanian translation with the GUI of OO

Hello,
So far I've quite comfortable working with Poedit within its own range
of possibilities. What's essentially lacking though is a way of
correlating my translations with the actual GUI of OO.
I'm running into many instances when I simply have to know more of the
context than a given string can actually provides in order to get not
just the concepts right but also the right order of words, declination
endings, etc. One way of grappling with this situations is by
juxtaposing my translation with those in German, Russian, and Polish
(the languages I know besides my native) but it is not satisfactory.
Is there a tool / technique / special OO build or extension that would
held me locate the translated strings cur in the GUI of OO?

Hello,
I wasn't aware something like a KeyID build existed. It sounds very
promising. Based on Serg Bormant's description this is exactly what is
needed in the case of declined languages (I'm translating to Lithuanian)
which are much more contextual than analytic languages.
Where can I download the latest version of KeyID?

kid is very usefull, especially for offline translation and moreover with
separate build when adding key IDs to the language of translation. We can
simply grep for key ID on the .po tree to identify the one msgstr from
large set. For ex., in Russian we need to differ verbs with nouns because
they has different translations, so verb Print is "Печатать", but the
same noun in dialog title is "Печать" and so on. With kid we can find the
right target "Print" in list of others.

Do you mind clarifying "not helpful at all" ?
I thought it was a feature our testers used a lot, so I have prepared
genLang with a "kid switch" so it later can be expanded to generate the
keys. But it is not useful I will of course not do it.

IIRC the time I build a KID, the language pack does not work, you have
to build a full installation set. I also found the KID thing not helpful
at all. IMO it is more useful to set the environment variable HELP_DEBUG
export HELP_DEBUG=1
it will show you the help ids of all UI elements and dialogs (with it
controls); this, combined with extended help tips enabled (Tools
- Options - General), is rather useful: you can search in pootle for the
respective help id.
So IMHO help ids are more helpful: screenshot of File - Export as PDF...

This is a email from "newbies revolutionaries". ;-)
I (finally) did a funcional build and did the kid lang pack for my
env, but i found a problem: how enable this "language" ? For this, I
removed my other lang packs (en-US and pt-BR).
I remember that when i changed the code to insert pt-BR in OOo, was
necessary add this language in the source.
Or someone have other suggestion?

No idea, but I don't think there was any logic we relied on, and
actually the alphabet was changed at a certain point to use a larger set
(more compact strings: compare "65535 File", "FFFF File", "k,J file").
So in the latest version identifiers were not hex numbers.
And identifiers were juxtaposed to the human-readable form so that you
could have a "en-US kid build" with strings like "2,J Save", "tH3 Open"
and an "it kid build" with strings like "2,J Salva", "tH3 Apri". This
message confirms that we had kid builds in more languages, so this
partially corrects what I was saying (link is of course dead):

Provided it's unique (or autoincrementing, as you wish), it will be
fine, unless someone has better knowledge and can make a better use of
the identifiers. But I really believe that uniqueness is all we need.
