newbie: where to put build.xml?

Hi,

Is it possible for the build file to reside in a directory that is also part 
of the source directory in a javac task?

for example:

myproject/bin/build.xml (basedir=".." & srcdir="com" !)
myproject/com/mycompany/source.java
myproject/com/mycompany/source2.java

I've tried this but it didn't seem to work. Ant didn't give any errors but 
didn't seem to compile anything also.
