If you are running Drill in embedded mode and try to use the JDBC Driver to connect via Squirrel (for example), the connection times out. Apparently, this is because you need to specify all of the Drill jars on the class path, not just the drill-jdbc-all-1.0.0.jar; there is no easy way for users to do this in tools like Squirrel.
