Jini.org

I noticed Jini.org has been down, is Jim still around? This site is
filled with invaluable information.

Regards,

Peter.

Sad to see it go, though I always hoped it would get a little more love...

I thought I had a (quite old) backup of the MySQL db but I can't find
it. It may have been on my recently stolen laptop... I do have the
original jini.org (the Collabnet, pre-MediaWiki, site) spidered as
html. I also have a number of videos from the last Jini Community
Meeting that Jerome Bernard shot. I don't know if it's the full set,
but Jerome might have backups if I'm missing any. It looks like
presentation pdfs may be in the Wayback Machine (along with other
content, I'm sure), so with these videos we should be able to
reconstruct most of the content. Truth be told the wiki for Jini.org
was mostly community meeting schedules and presentation files and the
specifications (painfully) reworked in wiki format.

Some background here, because there was no external backup, we had no
other choice than to pay the bill here to gain access to the data.

There are at least three intellectual property issues, content
copyright, use of "jini", and the "jini.org" domain name registration.

I strongly agree with the rapid action to preserve the site for a year,
but now that we have a year, I think we should try to get Infrastructure
and Legal Affairs to take over ensuring its permanence. Ideally, the
jini.org domain name registration should be transfered to the ASF.

How about the copyrights of the material of the site? Contact legal affairs?

It is great that jini.org will live another year on community effort
and dollars, but isn't this something that Apache infrastructure can
really help with?? It shouldn't be needed to have this come out of
community member pockets.
Infrastructure team is typically very flexible with stuff that
projects want to set up, so "just ask" is a good initial approach, and
to do so, list down what is needed.

the site.

Hi Zoltan-

Great to hear from you - hope you're doing well.

I think hosting somewhere else is a great idea. Since
we don't have a full backup of the site -- we'd probably
need to host for one more year at dreamhost to get a
copy of all the contents and buy time for porting to a
new site.

Hi Jim, Guys,

Since I had so much fun for years thanks to Jini and its great community and
received a lot of HW from Sun to further Jini research and applications, I
cannot help not offering the following:

Besides doing the normal academic duties, I'm also responsible for our
department's IT infrastructure, so I do not see any problem of offering free
hosting for Jini.org on one of our servers in order to keep alive the Jini
knowledgebase and help its community.

This needs approval from our HoD but I don't think that would be a problem.
If you think this is could be a solution for the problem, please let me know
what is required for the system to be transferred. Also, the domain will
have to be sorted out.

Please let me know how it sounds.

Cheers

Hi Peter-

Yes, I'm still around :-)

Last year I asked for help in funding Jini.org (one person contributed
$25,
but I ended up essentially having to fund it myself for the year). I
asked a
couple times, but no one stepped up and contributed. Since there didn't
look like there was real interest in funding the site, our contract
with the
provider unfortunately expired in early August.
