I should be back on dev@avalon.apache.org - this email is partly a test
to see that I am.

Either way - the flood was stopped by Brian at collab.net, who deleted a
couple of thousand messages from the queue before they got sent out.

The people who were unaffected by the flood probably had some kind of
spam filtering in place (1000 messages with same subject and same
content would be classified as SPAM).
