Apache Tomcat 10 Issue
We have been using a Firebird Database with Java and Tomcat. The vendor who sold us this system has abandoned us after receiving payment to help us upgrade.
Moving it to a new Windows Server and upgrading because of vulnerabilities in Apache Tomcat 9.0.16.
I can open the web page and login and see all of the records I am supposed to see. Two things that do not work that may be Tomcat related. Opening attachments that are attached to a record and sending an email notification. Here is the message received when trying to open an attachment.
HTTP Status 404 - Not Found
________________________________
Type Status Report
Message The requested resource [/files/Requests/Change%2021743/flameproof%20castings.xlsx] is not available
Description The origin server did not find a current representation for the target resource or is not willing to disclose that one exists.
________________________________
Apache Tomcat/10.1.8
"/files/Requests/Change%2021743/flameproof%20castings.xlsx" is the correct location for the attachment. This matches the current working server.
Here are the versions that we are going to and from:
Firebird 3.0.4.33054 to 3.0.13.33818
Java 8 to Microsoft JDK with Hotspot 11.0.23+9
Apache Tomcat 9.0.16 to 10.1.8
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill Short

Rob - I am not familiar with any of this I would not know how to check my build / deploy setup. The guy who designed this system completely ghosted us after receiving our maintenance payment.

Dimitris – Most of what you are saying here is over my head, I don't want to give the impression that I have any experience with Apache or Java.
The only mail related .jar I round on the existing server is a mail.jar located in WEB-INF/lib. I did try copying that into the new server but that did not make any difference.
I do not know how to tell if my mail session is configured through .xml files, and not bundled as a standalone jar.
I would be happy to provide any additional information that you might think is helpful. If you think my level of inexperience with this is too big of a hurdle please let me know. I still appreciate all of the help you have given me to this point.

Your application uses JavaMail (javax.mail.Session), but the implementation
classes are missing from the runtime classpath.
These jars should be present in your working Tomcat 9 deployment in
WEB-INF/lib, in Tomcat’s lib, or even in the JRE’s
old <JAVA_HOME>/jre/lib/ext mechanism.
Locate and copy the JavaMail implementation jars from the old server to the
new one. You will also need to add the latest version of javax.activation
jar for it to work with Java >= 11.

RE: Apache Tomcat 10 Issue
Posted by "Short, William J." <wj...@haroldbeck.com>.
Wow! There was no files.xml in the Catalina/localhost directory. I copied that file from the existing server and immediately the attachment problem was fixed.
The email notification issue still exists. Below is the Tomcat page that pops up when I try to send.
Attached is the .txt file that was created as soon as a I attempted to send the notification message. That was in C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 10.1/Logs
Let me know if there are any other logs you might need.
And THANK YOU!

Bill,
Upgrading from Tomcat 9 to 10.1 is not a security upgrade but rather a Jakarta EE migration (javax.* to jakarta.*).If your app isn’t explicitly Jakarta ready, parts of it can break in ways that look unrelated. Latest Tomcat 9 release, 9.0.115, contains fixes for all known issues in previous versions. Additionally, version 10.1.8 is quite old and you should consider upgrading to the latest 10.1.52.
A 404 status usually indicates that the /files context isn’t mapped, or Tomcat can’t access the underlying path.
Please check these on your current deployment:
1) Do you have webapps/files ? Yes. That is where the .war file is located and the program (named Octane) also has a directory under webapps.
2) Do you have conf/Catalina/localhost/files.xml?
3) Do you see any line indicating the error in Tomcat logs/ ?
4) Does your Windows account, under which the service is running, have read access to the attachments directory?
Tomcat itself doesn’t send emails. The broken email notification may be directly related to the Jakarta namespace changes that come with Tomcat 10.1, which your app/libraries may not adhere to.
We can investigate further if you provide the stack trace from the logs.
Kind regards,
Dimitris

RE: Apache Tomcat 10 Issue
Posted by "Short, William J." <wj...@haroldbeck.com>.
IT WORKED!
It did not initially work. I could not open the Tomcat page.
I went back to the original server and rebuilt everything from scratch (uninstalled Tomcat, Java, and anything having to do with the Octane program).
After reinstalling and replacing all of the files I need to replace (including the new .war file) and everything appears to work. I have a user running it through a full test right now.
Thanks for all of the help!

ok,
replace the javax.mail-api-1.6.2.jar with
https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.sun.mail/javax.mail/1.6.2<https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.sun.mail/javax.mail/1.6.2>
The jar file you have contains only javax.mail classes. The other does
include both the api in javax.mail package and the implementation
classes in package com.sun.mail.

RE: Apache Tomcat 10 Issue
Posted by "Short, William J." <wj...@haroldbeck.com>.
Good Morning,
So here is what I know of the .war file. I did not use the .war file (octane.war) from the existing server when installed everything on the new server. I used the .war file that the vendor sent with the latest install files.
Attached is the list of files from the unzipped .war WEB-INF/lib directory. I put the files side by side and you can see that the new server has one file that does not exist on the original server, javax.mail-api-1.6.2.jar.
And the original server has two files that don’t exist on the new server, log4j-1.2.8.jar, log4j-core.jar
Looks like the rest of the files are the same although I did not check that the sizes of each file are the same.
Hopefully these mean something to you,
Thanks for the help,
Bill

Hi,
No, these jar files in <tomcat>/lib are tomcat related only.
Next step,
send us what is in the application war file. War file is just zip
file. Unzip it and send us list of jar files in WEB-INF/lib directory

Hi,
No, these jar files in <tomcat>/lib are tomcat related only.
Next step,
send us what is in the application war file. War file is just zip
file. Unzip it and send us list of jar files in WEB-INF/lib directory

Here are all of the .jar files on the old server. I did not move any of these manually to the new server. Should I be moving these?
Also, I do not need to go to Tomcat 10, as long as I am on a stable version with no vulnerabilities I am happy.

Put the jar file into your CATALINA_BASE lib folder. Are you subscribed to Tomcat via PDAF?

Bill,
why are you moving to Tomcat 10 when Tomcat 9 isn't end of life yet? Did the vendor recommend Tomcat 10 with their application?
My advice would be to only change one thing at a time and then test it.
In your case:
1. Move your old working software stack to the new machine (old java, old tomcat, old everything) -> test it 2. Create a second tomcat 9 (download the latest one) directory next to the old working one, stop the old tomcat and copy everything from old-tomcat9/webapps to new-tomcat9/webapps. Also, check if any other file is present in the old tomcat (you already mentioned you a files.xml, etc). Also copy these files to the new tomcat directory.
Maybe even check contents of files, they may have been changed in the old tomcat directory. Test it!
3. Update to java 11. Test it!
And so on.

I'm not a maintainer, but my guess is that IF the support for that will
be dropped, it will be announced WAY ahead of the fact. I'm pretty sure
that the migration tool will at least be supported until EOL of Tomcat
10, unless there would be a good reason not to. And after that? There
probably will be people who will specialize in migrating old software
for a price.

I don't see a reason we would drop support for this for a good long
time. There isn't much of a reason to drop it, given how small of a
component it actually is. It basically goes the equivalent of "sed -e
's/javax\.//jakarta\./g'" on all your files. It's *somewhat* more
complicated than that, but it doesn't require a great deal of maintenance.

I'd recommend that you DO use the Migration Tool to run your legacy JAR
files through it a single time, then use those moving forward instead of
the originals. It will make your deployments faster, and you don't have
to have a deploy-before-release strategy.

How long do you think Tomcat 10 will support the 'webapps-javaee'
location for auto-migration of javax.servlet to jakarta.servlet? While
we have migrated our own source code to use jakarta.servlet, we have
hooks to old open source libraries like Vaadin 8 that are built on javax
with deep ties to GWT and Atmosphere and others that make upgrading
fully to jakarta.servlet nearly impossible. We currently depend on
Tomcat 10's 'webapps-javaee' to migrate for us and it seems we do have a
working 'webapps' code base as we know that Tomcat 9 will go away
eventually and we need to prepare as best we can now. I presume if
webapps-javaee were to no longer be supported in Tomcat 10, we could run
the migration tool directly, but it is convenient for us to release our
code into webapps-javaee, let Tomcat auto-migrate it, and then release
to others from the resulting webapps.

Bill,
as others already pointed out, Tomcat 9.0.16 is over 6 years old. See
https://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-9.0-doc/changelog.html
Tomcat 9.0.115 has been released about 1 month ago, so you should be
good here for now. Tomcat 9 will be under active development (i.e.
security fixes!) until roughly one year from now. Shortly before that
you can think about moving to another major Tomcat version, if this app
of yours is still in use.
Oh, and once you have everything running, you can try to improve your
installation by separating CATALINA_HOME and CATALINA_BASE. This way,
you don't need to touch webapps and copy or merge any config files
(usually) when updating Tomcat. But yeah, first try to get your system
running again.

Hello Sebastian,
The Apache Tomcat version we are on (9.0.16) shows as having Critical CVE's. Back when our vendor was communicating with us, I notified him and he said that we could go to Tomcat 10. He sent me instructions to download and install Tomcat 10.1.8, Java 11, Firebird 3, and the latest version of his program. He was going to do all of the conversion.
So I have no need to be on Tomcat 10 if 9.0.115 will work.
I will try your suggestions below of installing to match the existing server, test it, then install Tomcat 9.0.115.
Thanks and I will reply back once I am at that point.
Bill

Bill,
why are you moving to Tomcat 10 when Tomcat 9 isn't end of life yet? Did the vendor recommend Tomcat 10 with their application?
My advice would be to only change one thing at a time and then test it.
In your case:
1. Move your old working software stack to the new machine (old java, old tomcat, old everything) -> test it 2. Create a second tomcat 9 (download the latest one) directory next to the old working one, stop the old tomcat and copy everything from old-tomcat9/webapps to new-tomcat9/webapps. Maybe even check contents of files, they may have been changed in the old tomcat directory. Test it!
3. Update to java 11. Test it!
And so on.
