This task is strongly related to the work for ODE-985, not sure in which order they should be done. The issue is that implementing ODE-985 will create a migration issue for running processes after release. The best solution is to not support more serialization mechanisms and use a generic tool like jdeserialize (http://code.google.com/p/jdeserialize/) and possibly some metadata to convert to a portable format. 

I anticipate some issues with the fact that jacob uses a GZIPOutputStream, not sure how sophisticated the tool would get.
