   Thanks for the reviews @thisisnic and @paleolimbot. Now that we've reviewed two different implementations of this, is one a clear winner? I'm in favor of having a standalone `s3_init` that the user calls out of band of any S3 function calls which produces an error if it's called multiple times in a session. I think I'm also in favor of not exporting it at this time, and we can always choose to export it later on if we find we like it enough.
