Hmm, at least we are trying to send back failure on validation error(https://github.com/apache/cassandra/blob/cassandra-2.0.7/src/java/org/apache/cassandra/db/compaction/CompactionManager.java#L402).

Did you see "Failed creating a merkle tree for .." in the log on validating node?
