[Recommonmark|https://recommonmark.readthedocs.io/en/latest/] is a markdown parser for Sphinx. We're currently using v0.40 in combination with Sphinx v1.5.6. It is not compatible with later versions of Sphinx. [Suggestions are to swap this out with another markdown parser|https://github.com/sphinx-doc/sphinx/issues/3800#issuecomment-355951388] like [m2r|https://github.com/miyakogi/m2r].
