[Bug 6115] New: Set Filter for Two levels

https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=6115

Summary: Set Filter for Two levels
           Product: Spamassassin
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P5
         Component: sa-update
        AssignedTo: dev@spamassassin.apache.org
        ReportedBy: brad@zehr.net

I would love to see Spamassassin have the option of choosing to levels of
filtering.
For example:

If an email scores above 5 --- delete it
If it scores great then 1 but less then 5 ---> mark it SPAM

This would be a big help for the boarder line emails that I sometimes get form
clients.
Please!
Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,
Brad :)

You might just as well have your MTA have a look at the X-Spam-Level header,
and act upon a certain threshold-ish number of asterisks, like say 10 or 8.

required_score 5
add_header spam Report _REPORT_

Adds a full report to everything over the "lower" required_score threshold, as
it actually is the default with report_safe 0.

I don't see much point in having multiple thresholds, just to assign different
headers or flags based on those. Other than maybe setting them up in SA, rather
than your MTA. In the case of yet more thresholds, as per your example, things
get really nasty.

IMHO, it's best just to use the existing X-Spam-Level for that.

There might still be a point in having more than one threshold, though. You
could add X-Spam-Flag: YES to mail over the higher threshold and let your MTA
look for that, while adding a full report to everything over the lower
threshold. It would let you configure all thresholds in one place, instead of
several, FWIW.

(Personally, I use three thresholds and four classes: probable ham, unsure,
probable spam, and virtually certain spam.)

SA /does/ not actively filter your mail, SA /is/ a filter to be used by your
mail processing chain.

> If an email scores above 5 --- delete it
> If it scores great then 1 but less then 5 ---> mark it SPAM

SA does NOT have the ability to delete, bounce or deliver mail. SA can
investigate your mail and assign a score indicating the level of spammyness.

Any action taken whatsoever based on that judgment, the score and/or the rules
hit, is the duty of other tools in your mail processing chain. The
X-Spam-Status and X-Spam-Level headers exist particularly for this finer
grained level of filtering.

RESOLVED INVALID.

Please tend to the users mailing list, if you need help.
