verification docs aren't quite correct:
* in step 4/unpack.  src extracts into yet another subdir.
* maven source plugin ignores .git* so .gitignore/.git/.gitattributes aren't in the tarball
* maven source plugin adds a 'DEPENDENCIES' file
* maven source plugin ignores file system links, so apidocs is missing
