    Wow, now I know why some people complain about rules.mk being
    ugly. :-)

    What do you think about redefining the distclean target?

        distclean:
            helpers/cvsclean
            ./buildconf

yeah, who wrote that crap anyway :)

This too doesn't ignore APR, but I'm sure you could take care of that
quickly and it would run like a champ on Tru64.

Why do you want this?  Does our distclean delete too much according to
de facto distclean "standards" (I don't know if there is a consensus)?
