Xalan Writer Error

I have been successfully running Xalan from the command line. Suddenly, no
matter what I do, I keep getting the following:
 
>Error! SER002 No writer supplied for serializer
>Xalan: was not successful.
>XSLProcessor: done
 
Any clues? And where can I find such error messages documented? I've been
looking everywhere.
