About stylebook

I want to expand stylebook such that it recognize svg tags, i.e. I want it
to pre-generate the images if they find a 
<svg file="whatever.png">
</svg>

Can someone point me to where I can learn how to extend stylebook?   Will I
need to modify code or is there a more modularized way of doing it ?
