[D] Idea: Git-graph-inspired visual change history in the Change sidebar [superset]
GitHub user TCP404 created a discussion: Idea: Git-graph-inspired visual change history in the Change sidebar
I’d like to propose a visual change history experience for Superset, inspired by VS Code’s Git Graph, integrated into the existing Change sidebar.
## Problem
For dashboards (and potentially charts later), linear change history is often not enough to understand how an object evolved over time, especially when multiple edits happen across iterations. Users may want to quickly answer questions like:
- what changed recently?
- which version introduced a regression?
- how does the current version relate to an earlier saved state?
- can I visually compare revisions before restoring?
## Proposal
Add an optional graph view to the existing Change sidebar.
This view would:
- visualize saved revisions as nodes
- show parent/merge relationships as edges
- let users select a node to inspect metadata (author, timestamp, summary)
- support compare-to-current / compare-to-previous
- support restoring a selected revision
## Why in the Change sidebar?
The Change sidebar is already the natural place where users expect version/change-related actions. A graph view there would extend the current workflow instead of introducing a separate history page.
## Initial scope
To keep this narrow, I suggest starting with:
- dashboard-only support
- read-only visual history
- compare revisions
- restore a previous revision
Non-goals for an initial version:
- full Git semantics
- arbitrary branching operations
- real-time merge conflict resolution
- support for every Superset object type
## Open questions
- Does the current revision model already expose enough lineage metadata for a graph?
- Would maintainers prefer this as a core feature, a design proposal, or an extension candidate?
- Is the Change sidebar considered the right entry point for this workflow?
If this direction makes sense, I’m happy to turn it into a SIP with a more detailed UX and implementation proposal.
