[Bug 4564] New: spamc / spamd hangs on certain users / emails

http://bugzilla.spamassassin.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4564

Summary: spamc / spamd hangs on certain users / emails
           Product: Spamassassin
           Version: 3.0.4
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P5
         Component: spamc/spamd
        AssignedTo: dev@spamassassin.apache.org
        ReportedBy: rmang@lexiconn.com

spamc and spamd hang on certain users / emails (not all the time for the same
user) until spamc times out after 10 minutes. Below are the details from lsof,
strace, debug. Some users hang up even after I have deleted all their bayes
and auto-whitelist files.

The email that caused this one was a 190 kb email which was a forward of a
joke with many images/text attachments (16).

OS is RHEL 3.5, latest Storable and perl modules, SA 3.0.4, razor 2.77

When it finally times out, the debug log shows:

Hopefully someone has an idea. It does not happen on all users, and the same
user may get some emails through, some do not get through...

Is this hang due to the following problem which appears to be corrected in the
3.1 branch?
---
removed use of the Storable module, due to several reported hangs on SMP Linux
machines.
---

We are running an SMP kernel with a hyperthreading CPU. If this is the case,
any workaround in the 3.0.4 version or is the solution to upgrade to 3.1 when
stable? Thanks.

Rob, that has me stumped, too. good to hear it's not necessarily an SA bug
though ;)

So, I don't think this should be a 3.1.0 blocker -- and it currently isn't.
thoughts?

FWIW, the pasted logs seem incomplete; the strace for process 7163 says that
it's hung waiting for fd 6, but fd 6 doesn't appear in the lsof output. so
either it's incomplete, or there's something screwy at the kernel level going on.

Also, are there any third-party rulesets installed?

ok, system started hanging again after 6 days of running, spamd just timing
out, not processing every message, random users hanging, etc... I now set the
option:
--max-conn-per-child=1

and things seem to be working without getting hung up. If it happens again,
I'll get an strace -f of the daemon for more detailed info. But, there seems to
be an issue with SA 3 and SMP RHEL server and spamd hanging...

well, we've now seen clamav and local sending of attachments getting hung up,
so I'm guessing it's not specific to spamassassin. Seems to be OS/kernel
dependent (or sendmail), which is weird as this is a stock RHEL 3.5 server...
Sorry for the false alarm. If you have any ideas/pointers, please let me know.
I'll attach a last strace of a sendmail local send of an attachment showing the
hangup as well.

ok, reinstalled everything, rebooted the server, and 3.1.0 rc-2 seems to be
working fine now... case closed for now. :)
