Showcase for IOs and Android skins?

Hi,

I started working for my new employer 1 day ago and I might already have a chance to do a project using Apache Flex. I already did the convincing that using flex we'll be able to ship a cross-platform solution with individual skinning for IOs and Android, but unfortunately I couldn't find an example of the current state of these skin types.

Is there some tourdemobile available that demonstrates this? Or is it even included in our tourdeflex and all I have to do, is to build the application?

AW: AW: Showcase for IOs and Android skins?

Posted by Christofer Dutz <ch...@c-ware.de>.
Ok,

so I checked out the tour-de-flex-mobile and found that it wasn't actually buildable (At least not with IntelliJ)
So as a test I did a branch in which I added all the stuff needed to build the application with flexmojos out of the box. Will definitely be a good starting point for testing the new skins (all I have to change is the theme dependency in my pom.xml). Just pushed it back as I thought it might come handy for someone ... I have no intention on actually merging that back a dependency the (not yet existing) developer branch or master nor introduce a dependency to flexmojos.

Yes Chris, that is my plan. I am very close to merging the new Android
skins into the develop branch. So, that should almost certainly go out
with the next release. I plan to start with the iOS 7 skins soon after
that.

up a rapid prototype using the android skins and hopefully show off how
fast you can do stuff like this with Flex ans simply use the older IOs
skins that are already available as a start.

Sounds like a good plan. You could perhaps use the TourDeFlexMobile code
available in the flex-examples git repo as a starting point for your
prototype.

All the best for your new gig!

Thanks,
Om

Is there any step-by-step how to for dummies?
so I can also use the skins :)

compiled into the application? To me it looks as if this would make the
output larger.

I guess so, but otherwise it may be too difficult or bothersome for some
users to use the skins. I'm all for getting the smaller binary size possible
when it comes to mobile apps, but I don't know if saving some extra kbs are
worth the trouble.

You have to create two output files for Android and iOS, but the source and
compiler arguments to get the SWF used for packaging is most times the same,
and ADT runs after getting the SWF file compiled.

Maybe this is more of a compiler/tooling problem and the theme could be
distributed both ways, one having both skin types packaged, and the other
with two separate SWCs for each system.

Thanks Om,

just tried that and got:
Validating download: C:\apps\apache-flex-4.14.0/frameworks/libs/osmf.swc
OSMF download failed

maybe you know is there any workaround for this?

settings used:
"Apache Flex SDK Nightly"
Air 15+player 15 (also tried Air 14 + Player 14)
All required and optional components

Thanks in advance

Yes, the plan is to release the new Android 4.x skins (and hopefully the
iOS7+ skins) in the next release.

In the meantime, if you want to try out the skins, you can download the
nightly version of the sdk by following these steps:

1. Go to flex.apache.org/installer.html
2. Download the Installer
3. Right click on the Installer and select 'Show Dev Builds'
4. In the Select Flex Version dropdown, select 'Apache Flex SDK Nightly'
5. After the SDK is installed, point your current Flex Mobile project to
the new Flex SDK
6. Just re-compile your Flex mobile project and run it on an Android with
OS version greater than 4.0
You should see the new skins in your app running on your phone.

By default, you will not see the news Android skins when running the app on
the AIR Simulator. To see it in the AIR Simulator, follow these steps:

1. Add -includes=mx.utils.AndroidPlatformVersionOverride to your Flex
Mobile project's Flex Compiler arguments
2. Recompile and run your app in the AIR Simulator.
You should the new skins in your app running the AIR Simulator.

Thanks,
Om

Am I right thinking these skins will be available out-of-the-box in the
next Flex release?
If yes when it will be released?
If no is there any howto use them? (simple example project would be
extremely helpful :) )

Yes, you should be able to. In the mobiletheme/defaults.css file [1], look
for the TextInput entry under:
@media (os-platform: "android") AND (min-os-version: "4.1.2")

TextInput { skinClass: ClassReference(
"spark.skins.android4.StageTextInputSkin");  contentBackgroundAlpha: 0;
focusColor: #33B5E5;  contentBackgroundColor: #DEDEDD;
contentBackgroundBorder: "flat";  fontFamily: RobotoRegular;
selectionHighlighting: "never";  focusEnabled:"false";  focusThickness: 0;
}
You can copy paste this into your app's css file and you should be able to
the Android skins in your iOS app.

Thanks,
Om

Hi, Om!

Can I somehow use the Android skins for text input on iOS?
When I launch the app on iPhone, I get other skin for that.

To see the new skins in the AIR Simulator, add this to the compiler
directives:

-includes=mx.utils.AndroidPlatformVersionOverride

Saw it, but only could think of the ADL parameter I already posted about, and
that I tested and won't be enough. Media queries defining OS version is
something added by the Apache people and I haven't used it so far, sorry.

As you say, it seems Alex has already something that would work.

I don't consider it to be a bug from Adobe tho, more a feature to be added
to ADL, I also asked time ago to add an argument to change the screen
dimensions reported to the ones of the device simulated and not the ones of
the host computer, as using stage is not always possible or desirable, but I
was ignored heh.

Are you subscribed to dev@flex.apache.org? This is the relevant thread:

But wouldn't using these media queries result in both skin types being compiled into the application? To me it looks as if this would make the output larger. While this might be good in a web application, when building Air apps, I usually have to create two output files for iOS and Android. That's why I was thinking about two packages. But if it's not that much overhead, your current solution is definitely cooler ;-)

The expected behaviour would be to have the Android and iOS theme in the

of course, nothing is written in Stone. I'd expect it to be a swc separated
from the current mobile.swc, and then use one or the other through the theme

Oh,

well I fixed some of the problems in the build and created a mobile.swc in order to use the skins however I needed to duplicate the android4.css file as otherwise the normal skins would have been used.

How about splitting up the theme into several modules? This way for example there would be one mobile, mobile-android and mobile-ios theme ... would make things a lot easier for the user.

But nevertheless ... the skins look very nice ... good job :-) ... my boss was impressed how easy it was to have something appear native Android and I promised that a native iOS theme will be coming up and supporting that would be simply replacing a dependency in the maven build ... so I hope after finishing the Android stuff you still have the drive and energy to continue on iOS ;-)

AW: AW: AW: Showcase for IOs and Android skins?

Posted by Christofer Dutz <ch...@c-ware.de>.
Hi Om ...

for testing I replaced the content of default.css with that of your android4.css but that didn't help.
I had to explicitly list the classes of android4 in the MobileThemeClasses class and now the classes are in the swc ... but I have to admit, that I'm sort of surprised that I have to do something like that ... If I create a swc library using flexmojos I never had to list the files ... I only need to do that for SWFs ... has something changed here or has this always been that way and it's simply something Flexmojos automates?

Hi Om,

I whipped up a demo application and wanted to replace the normal mobile theme with your version, so I switched the FDK to your branch and built it (After fixing the MobileBusyIndicator class). Unfortunately the resulting swc never seems to contain your android4 classes ... do I have to do anything special in order to test your android skins?

Yes Chris, that is my plan. I am very close to merging the new Android
skins into the develop branch. So, that should almost certainly go out
with the next release. I plan to start with the iOS 7 skins soon after

Hi,

Yeah, I already saw that, but is there any work put into IOs or will this be started as soon as the Android stuff is finished?

Well as the customer wants Android now and IOs later I think I could whip up a rapid prototype using the android skins and hopefully show off how fast you can do stuff like this with Flex ans simply use the older IOs skins that are already available as a start.
