So the patched implementation pretty much follows {{performSSTableRewrite()}}, which looks like the correct way to handle this to me. We could modify {{GcCompactionTest}} a bit to make some of the effects more testable, see [ebd7de7|https://github.com/spodkowinski/cassandra/commit/ebd7de758b48a6f924d60eeecbc615c355c87257].
