How does XPath work?

Hi all,
I'm currently working on search through XML document using an XPath 
expression.I'd like to understand how it's done within Xalan: Basically, 
how, from an xpath expression, can you obtain a list of node that match 
the request?
Is there a available  document explaining your design? If not, is there 
anybody who could explains it to me?
