Hi Andreas,

in my opinion you should switch to Java 7 as a minimum requirement.

1. The current Lucene Core 5.2.1 requires Java 7, see http://lucene.apache.org/core/5_2_1/SYSTEM_REQUIREMENTS.html
2. The TIKA team is moving with release 1.10 to Java 7 also, see TIKA-1536
3. And public updates for Java 6 (Feb 2013) and even for Java 7 (Apr 2015) aren't available anymore, see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/eol-135779.html#Java6-end-public-updates

Due to the API changes in PDFBox 2.0, you can jump from Java 5 to 7 as a requirements without interfering to many projects.

Cheers,
Lars
