Implementig Custom Authentication?

Hi to all Developers,
 I am trying to implement a Custom Authentication Method based on Basic
Authentication... I am wondering to know if it is possible to trap Basic
Authentication within Apache and add my own Authentication algorithm with a
Servlet for example...

 You know that with mod_perl ya can do that?!
