[Studio] Eclipse plugin snapshot update
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi all
For the dist we are ATM deploying a snapshot dist.
Do you think it's worth to do the same for the plugin update site to have something like
http://vm094.oxylos.org/mirror-maven2/org/apache/directory/studio/ApacheDirectoryStudio/update/dev
(similar to http://directory.apache.org/studio/update/1.x/)
where we deploy the latest update site for the eclipse plugin?
If so the next question would be 'How does eclipse recognize that the update site has changed?'. I don't know if this
works by just deploying the updatesite-x-SNAPSHOT.tar.gz to the URL above.
WDOT?

Ah yeah,
I omitted to read the most important part of the JBoss documentation:
Section "Better management of external plugins".
I like this solution.
+1 for it.

Yes, that's easy. But you pollute your eclipse installation this way
with nightly snapshot you want to be able to change them easily. The way
it's done by jboss you have a link to a directory which is 'static'. The
directory itself can be deleted and/or updated (delete content and unzip
newer nightly snapshot) easier than removing the copied plugins/features
jars from an eclipse installation and recopy the newer ones.
Note that you'll be forced to delete the older jars all because you
never now if the are obsolete within a newer nightly release.
That's way the solution using the link stuff should be proferred IMO.

Well, I was thinking we could tell our users they need to copy/paste the
content of the 'plugins' and 'features' folders of the ZIP on the
corresponding folders of their Eclipse installation.
That's not a very difficult task, so I think they can do it easily.

Nope. This zip must have another directory structure to make it work. It
must look like
eclipse
\ plugins
\ features
Otherwise it won't work :-(

Yeah, but I don't think a "normal" user would try to use a nightly version
of Studio. ;)
However, I think solution 2 is enough and as we already have the zip
generated at each build. We just need to deploy it aside the other already
available downloads.

IMO this is too complex for a 'normal' user. Thus I'd vote only for 2.

Hi Felix,
These are great ideas.
I think we can do both.
1°/ Add a nightly build update site on the oxylos machine where we deploy
the latest update site (as you said). People will be able to install the
snapshot version using the standard eclipse way.
Unfortunately, Eclipse won't be able to find an update between two builds of
this nightly update site (as the version number will stay the same). The
solution would be to uninstall Studio's features and plugins before
re-installing them with the update site.
2°/ We can also provide the update site as an archive download (zip) that
users can use to manually install in their Eclipse folder (the JBoss
solution).

I think we can add it.

I add nightly-plugin to the docs (the download link)
http://directory.apache.org/studio/nightly-builds.html.
Do we need to add the howto use it too or can we just link the jboss wiki?

Another possibility could be deploy a nightly snapshot of the plugin
which can be linked into eclipse like the jbosstools [1] do for their
nightly snapshots.
