Connection Pooling Slower than Direct Connection

Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone else out there noticed this problem/feature or
am I doing something completely wrong.

After setting up my app to use connection pooling, my application
actually runs slower.

I know the connection pooling implementation works through mysql logs.
The connection was definitely being recycled.

My setup

Ultra 5 with apache/tomcat
switch
Ultra 2 with mysql (mm.mysql-2.0.2)

Any ideas?
