log4j in Applet

In an trying to use log4j system in an Applet.
We are using the Java-plugin 1.3.1 from Sun.

When launching our application as a standalone application, it works fine.
When lanching as an Applet under the Java plug-in under Microsoft IE, it 
works fine too.

BUT with Netscape (like 4.78 or 6.2), it stops, with a ClassFormatError 
(bad magic number) !! Maybe a specific configuration has to be done for 
Applets ?
