I also vote for adding an highlighting function in OOO Impress: I need it for
classroom work, because changing text color is sometimes not possible (yellow,
for example, cannot be read). 

The same issue is described in Issue 115755 (Unconfirmed, 2 votes), with the
addition that Google docs Presentation supports highlighting : 
"Google docs Presentation application which lets you create PowerPoint
presentations  does offer a feature to highlight text on a slide. I have also
confirmed that changing the position and size of the text maintains the
highlight. If you download this file as a .ppt or .pptx and open it in Ingress
or PowerPoint, then it loses the highlight formatting." ( Christopher Cole
