Until Sun delivers JSR 203 it is not possible for Ant (or any pure Java
application for that matter) to assign permissions on files.

If you need to preserve permissions or other bulk file attributes use the <exec>
task to run the native tar executable for your platform.

Alternatively you can use the <chmod> task after untarring to selectively set
permissions on certain files.
