Yes, ASF hosts all project websites and provides server space.
If/when we graduate, the podling website will be moved to
vcl.apache.org. Apache provides a CMS but it is up to the community
whether to use it or something else as long as the content is static.

I also like Drupal but don't think it can be used due to the static
requirement. We actually use this for NCSU's VCL front page.

I'm not familiar with Sphinx. It looks like at least one other
project is using Sphinx:

I like the suggestions. I have updated
http://vcl.staging.apache.org/index.html.

I also worked on the css file. It's very basic. Any help from
someone with an eye for design is greatly appreciated.

It would be nice to figure out some way for the left nav bar to expand
based on the page you're on.

I'm going to start migrating the content from Confluence, starting
with the pages under Information.

Re: Rework the Apache VCL website?

Posted by Aaron Coburn <ac...@amherst.edu>.
Thanks Josh,

I like the general categories you set up. I would probably be a little more terse in the naming of the links:

General
* About
* Downloads
* License
* FAQ

Documentation
* Installation
* User's Guide
* Managing Images
* Administration

Community
* Get Involved
* Mailing Lists
* Wiki

ASF
* Apache Software Foundation
* Thanks
* Become a Sponsor

I like the idea of having a FAQ page, though perhaps that could be part of a wiki?

I think the "Requirements for using VCL" should be part of the Installation guide (which I think should go under Documentation). I wasn't sure how VCL Installer Docs differed from Installation Guide, but having both links is confusing.

I would also take out "Latest Release", since the "Downloads" page should contain that information.

I was unclear what "VCL Support" meant so I wouldn't include it.

I also would remove "Becoming a committer" because that should be part of the "Get Involved" page. Finally, I might add a link for a wiki, since ASF will provide access to one if we wish -- do you think that would be useful for the project?

I started putting together a nav area. It's just a start at some ideas I
thought might make it easier for people to find the information they are
looking for. I committed the changes, but did not publish them to production.
You can see it at the staging URL:

CMS has been set up: http://vcl.apache.org/index.html

We need to start discussing the design. I looked around at other ASF
sites. I like how rave.apache.org is simple and organized with a left
nav bar, and how there is a single documentation link rather than
displaying multiple sets for each version.

I think the first step is to create a basic template with a navigation
bar so that content can start to be added.

Committers should have access to edit things after installing the
bookmarklet at the bottom of this page:
https://cms.apache.org/

Also review the CMS reference:

That's reasonable, IMO.

As the site is migrated, please insure that we are conforming to the ASF branding requirements. If we need a pointer to ASF rules/policy, here -- can hunt down a pointer…

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the CMS will be set up prior to graduation:

Aren't you planning to graduate next month? I'd prefer not to create a
CMS site for your incubator site if next month we have to throw all that
away and start fresh.

Just an update. We are waiting for the ASF infrastructure group to
set up the CMS. The Jira issue I created on 5/7 has not been updated
and I don't know of any work that has been done. I sent a message to
the infrastructure list today asking about the status.

Re: Rework the Apache VCL website?

Posted by Andy Kurth <an...@ncsu.edu>.
I created/committed the initial set of CMS files/directories:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/vcl/site

I found 2 sets of instructions on how to do this, each suggests using
a different set of template files:
http://wiki.apache.org/general/ApacheCMSFAQ
http://www.apache.org/dev/cmsref.html#svn

I used the files from the stanbol site as recommended on the CMS FAQ
page since the files seemed to be a bit more configured. The only
change I made was to replace "stanbol" with "vcl" wherever it existed.

I made a request to infrastructure:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-4761

Re: Rework the Apache VCL website?

Posted by Andy Kurth <an...@ncsu.edu>.
I agree too. I believe we can request a new CMS site without
affecting the existing website/Confluence. The "getting started"
instructions are here:
http://wiki.apache.org/general/ApacheCMSFAQ

I have created a new Jira component called "project website (Apache
CMS)" and an issue to track our own progress and to tag Subversion
commits:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VCL-583

I can work on adding the required layout to our Subversion space and
create the infrastructure Jira request.

Thanks,
Andy

I agree, might as well use what Apache says. Just to provide alternatives, though, the current name for such things is "static site generator". Believe it or not, it's become one of the hot topics on many of the web design podcasts and blogs that I follow (perhaps a reaction to "heavy" solutions like WordPress, perhaps a reaction to the current popularity of Github). Here's a site which lists many such tools:
