A good place to start is looking at recent JIRAs
(https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO).  A great tip I got from
someone is to try to fix recent JIRAs that have already been fixed by
someone else. You can compare the quality of your work to the accepted fix
to get a sense of how well you know the code base.
